Book Review: The Power by Rhonda Byrne

August 17, 2010

I knew this book would be great, but I have to admit I was a little scared that it might be too much of the same and not enough to really help me go further. I am happy to report that The Power did not disappoint! I always wonder how writers pull off books in a series in which you can read one and not the other but again, Byrne hit the bulls eye by giving us a book that serves as either companion or primer. Having said that, I am glad I read The Secret first. It has given me quite a while to ruminate and practice. And then now, just when I’m ready for more, more arrives. There’s the Law of Attraction for ya. Haha.

But really, I have noticed a lot about the concept of The Power cropping up in my life, and then the book affirmed what I’ve been experiencing and made it so abundantly clear that my feelings are true instincts that should not be ignored. I don’t want to rewrite the book here or give away the crux of it; I’ll let you discover that on your own if you so desire. But suffice it to say that it is absolutely simple and yet completely profound. I would go so far as to say it is simpler even than The Secret and still more profound.

Basically, for anyone who read The Secret and thought, “That’s nice but I don’t get it; I haven’t been able to manifest anything because I’m not sure where to start…” this really adds the extra that’s needed to understand and see the whole picture. If you’re anything like me, you ask “Why?” a lot and the second book delivers a clear answer- the first volume laid it out there that this Law of Attraction business works without fail, but the second delves much deeper into the why and the how and why it is positively worth it to understand it.

It applies to everything and so all topics are covered- personal growth & happiness, success, money, relationships… I especially appreciated the money section- short and sweet and powerful! I feel like I know exactly what I need to do now- it’s not always easy, but with practice it will become second nature. And another awesome thing is that the more it works, the more it works! You’ll see what I mean- your love, happiness, growth and success become exponentially bigger and better. What’s the opposite of a vicious circle? I’m going to coin it… a delicious cycle! I’m so motivated to start putting this principle fully into action and see where my ambition can take me.

If you have a chance to pick up The Power, or are a big fan of The Secret, be sure to leave a comment and share your experience with it! They are both chock full of fantastic quotes and beautiful graphics. I think I like The Power better! There, I said it. I hope you love it too!

I loved The Secret and am so excited to hear that the second book is out. I think i will run pick it up tomorrow. I am the kind of person who has always believed that if you think positive then positive things will come to do and aslo the opposite. So I am excited to see what the new book can teach me. Thanks for this review Suzanne!

I got this book out of the library & had a really hard time swallowing it. My main problem with this book is the whole knowledge that bad things do happen to good people. It seems to not be an accepted concept, but we really know that this is the case. I read The Secret when I was in a much different place. I did start visualizing checks in the mail & they actually came. None were for over $5, but I guess you have to start small. 🙂 I returned the book to the library without reading it. Sometimes, you send out love & you just get trampled.
I guess the point of this reply is that I am wondering if I should give it another shot, or do you think I have an entirely conflicting viewpoint that would make the rest of the book the same as the first few pages.
Happy to hear you are doing well & have found your path!

Hi Jen! Thanks for reading and for your comment! I totally understand your reservations with the Secret. It’s something I struggle with myself. But as I search for guidance and meaning, I am used to finding a path or religion that I can take some of, but I don’t agree with the rest. That is how I take this. But I do think it’s possible that sometimes bigger things are happening that we can sometimes see… like a bigger force than us attracting something. Bad things totally happen to good people, and sometimes I wonder when I hurt myself somehow “Really, did I attract this?” But again, I do try to just take everything with a grain of salt, take the good and leave the iffy parts. I believe in visualization as a means to creating things, envisioning a way and making it happen. As far as the larger scope of attracting things unseen, I try to have faith, but I’m with you on a lot of it. I would definitely give it another try though. I really liked how this one gives specifics and exercises for really putting the concepts into practice. I just read it at the bookstore and took notes, so maybe you can do the same and not feel bad about spending money on it in case you still don’t get much from it! 🙂
